3135 vs 3235 Movement: Which Build Is Worth Your Money?

The 3135 and the 3235 are both workhorse automatic calibres, and both are available in current custom builds. The differences that matter are power reserve, serviceability and how the winding feels — not the spec sheet bragging rights.

The 30-second summary

  • 3135: 48-hour power reserve, 28,800 vph, proven over 25 years, cheap and easy to service, parts everywhere.
  • 3235: 70-hour power reserve, 28,800 vph, longer mainspring, more efficient escapement, better rate stability at low wind.

If you wear the watch daily and want the lowest long-term cost, the 3135 is the safer bet. If you rotate watches and want it running accurately after a weekend in the box, the 3235 is worth the premium.

Power reserve is the real difference

48 hours sounds like plenty until you take the watch off on Friday night and pick it up on Monday morning. A 3135 will have stopped. A 3235 will still be running, and — more importantly — will still be running accurately, because its longer mainspring keeps torque in a flatter band across the power curve.

That flatness is what you actually pay for. A watch at 20% wind on a shorter spring runs slow and with lower amplitude. Same watch at 20% wind on a longer spring holds its rate much closer.

Escapement and efficiency

The 3235 uses a redesigned escapement with a thinner pallet fork and a different geometry that loses less energy per beat. In practice this shows up as higher amplitude at the same wind and a more stable rate when the watch is nearly run down.

Serviceability

This is where the 3135 wins outright. It has been in production since 1988, every watchmaker has serviced one, and parts are inexpensive. The 3235 is newer, parts cost more, and some independents will not touch it.

If you plan to keep the watch for a decade and want a local service at a reasonable price, ask which calibre the build uses before you buy.

Winding feel

Both wind smoothly. The 3235 has a slightly heavier rotor feel and takes fewer turns to reach full wind. Neither is a reason to choose one over the other.

Which one to choose

If you… Choose
Wear one watch daily 3135 — cheaper to own, easier to service
Rotate several watches 3235 — still accurate after a weekend off
Want the newest spec 3235
Want lowest service cost 3135

What we stock

Both calibres are available across our Submariner and Datejust builds. Tell us your wear pattern and we will recommend one — and if you already own a 3135 build, we can regulate it and send you the timing printout.
